Voter knowledge of candidates important
As Sept. 19, the date for the electoral primaries approaches, concerns about voter turnout escalate.
Although candidates such as Linda Lingle have little to worry about, lesser-known candidates hope to attract enough voter attention to be remembered on Election Day.
Some candidates, however, are not well known and consider their anonymity an advantage over a poor-performing incumbent. Voters might be more inclined to vote against a person rather than for another.
By going to the polls uninformed, one may inadvertently vote for a candidate that advocates an unfavorable policy.
Paul Manner, for example, is running as a Republican for the U.S. Senate position.
His controversial plans for the expulsion of foreigners who have resided in Hawai`i for less than 18 years will probably be received positively.
Being informed about the candidates is highly important. To help in the voter's decision, Ka Leo will run profiles of candidates for the governor's race.
As you vote this fall, be it in the primary or the general election, be sure to vote intelligently. There is a surprising number of candidates who espouse unpopular ideas.
