Fatal Palolo accident shows need for light

On Sept. 3, motorcyclist Evin Lim broadsided a station wagon on 10th Avenue in Palolo Valley, killing himself and critically injuring both his passenger and the car's 54 year-old driver. Not limited to this incident, there are many reports of non-fatal accidents along this street as well; two, in fact, last week alone.

Caused by excessive speeds allowed by the lack of stop light, a blinking red light should be installed at the corner of Kailua St. and 10th Avenue.

With the William Jarrett Internediate School located nearby, a light would force drivers to stop, giving them a chance to monitor their speed as they approach the school.

As well, the decreased noise level would allow residents greater peace of mind and a better night's rest. Considering the number of student living off-campus in Palolo, this would be beneficial for them as well.

If the deaths of innocent people, such as the station wagon driver, are not enough to cause the city to act, what will?

Let's not wait for one of our children to be killed to stop the offenders. The benefits of the light are immeasurable even if it saves only one life.
