Kids tote guns, killing kids as we do nothing
Recently, a Campbell High School senior barricaded himself in a classroom with a .22-calibur handgun.
After an hour, police were able to get him to come out. Police are now investigating three previous offenses including terroristic threatening and weapons offenses.
These acts remain unexplainable because we allow them to continue. Has no one noticed a trend? Every other day we hear stories of kids bringing guns to school and committing violent, unexplainable acts.
The response to such bizarre situations has been tepid when compared to the severity of the problem.
We cannot solve problems like this with a few languid psychological evaluations and some minor counseling.
A careful, coordinated effort should be made to determine the source of this violence. If there is some aspect of recent events, or of a change in view and social environment that is causing this, we need to know about it.
These acts are seemingly unpredictable; prevention is the key here. How many more of our kids will have to die or suffer before we realize that we owe them more effort than this?

I wrote this a year before the Columbine shooting. And now, in 2019, my family lives in the same school district. Assuming we stay here another four years, my son will go to that school.
