Athletic funding law requires compliance
Gender equity in sports is a subject that the state of Hawai`i has been dodging far too long.
Currently, there are more male teams than female, and it is estimated that Hawai`i schools spend over twice as much on boys' athletics as girls'.
Presently, the state legislature is considering a new bill that would set statues to regulate Hawai`i athletic spending. The purpose of such a bill is to accommodate Title IX, a federal law that ensures women receive athletic opportunities equal to men.
This bill should not eve be questioned. Such measures are necessary if we ever plan to find equality in Hawaii's schools.
If the Board of Education refuses to comply with the state's new legislation, fines should be levied to force compliance. There is no reason why women should receive such a wide disparity in funding.
To continue in accepting such discrimination based on gender is nothing less than criminal.
