Hussein's son names heir above objections

In a surprise move that threatens to disturb the stability of the Middle East, Jordan's King Hussein recently named one of his five sons, Abdullah bin Hussein, as heir to the royal throne.

This is in contrast to the 34 year-old arrangement to have Hussein's brother, former Crown Prince Hassan, succeed him. Hussein says he revoked the succession arrangement because of a disagreement between himself and his brother.

This decision, however, might not be made in Jordan's best interests To make such a monumental decision based on a disagreement is politically questionable.

Hassan is an academic who has run the country several times in the king's absence. Because of this leadership experience, neighboring country Israel would view the succession with less uncertainty.

Hassan is also 15 years older than the new crown prince; this age difference could prove key in picking up the king's responsibilities.

While the younger Hussein has served as moderator in the Middle East, he still has big political shoes to fill.
