Engineering students use foriegn language

The University of Hawai`i College of Engineering recently chose to drop foreign language requirements from its curriculum.

While it is true that many engineering positions can be filled without the use of foreign languages, it seems that the College of Engineering has overlooked their purpose to a certain extent.

Higher education at a "university" is to prepare students for life in general -- universal -- and not just for one specific field.

Students trust the University of Hawai`i to provide them with a thorough education, a complete basis with which to compete in the "real world." Foreign language proficiency is a profound part of this education.

The College of Engineering should seriously reconsider its change of curriculum policy if it wishes to provide its students with a complete education.
