A new national holiday
"Letter of Intent" Day would revolutionize relationships
Today, April 7, marks an important day for the collegiate athlete" it's national "Letter of Intent Day" for basketball.
Starting today, university coaches can sign graduating high school basketball players for the upcoming season. Players can still change their minds, but coaches can begin to plan what kind of strengths their future team will emphasize.
Now, I'm not a big fan of basketball; I gave it up in eighth grade, when I was outgrown and ranked second shortest kid in my grade (girls included). But this "letter of intent day" stuff is right on.
Matter of fact, forget December 7 -- this should be the newest national holiday.
Why? Well, think of the possibilities, not the least of which would be a day to commemorate the winners of the NCAA basketball finals.
But wait! There's More!
Ladies, if you're in a relationship, wouldn't it be nice to get a little "letter of intent" from your sweetie? Something that states his intentions clearly and without ambiguity?
Here's an example:
Dear Ms. (insert your name here)
In light of the current, highly enjoyable state of our relationship, I wish to formally state my intentions for your consideration.
Over the past (whatever) months, I have found myself to be completely, wholeheartedly, and madly in love with you. With your permission, I would like to continue in my role as your special someone, with plans to increase commitment levels in our near future.
Put simply, I intend to (a.) Make you feel special in all situation, both public and private; (b.) Establish for you a place in my heat above and beyond all others; (c.) Buy you gifts, including (but not limited to) extravagant amounts of jewelry; and (d.) Involve you in both short-term and medium-term decision making activities.
I love you, and will for all eternity.
Sincerely,
(guy's name here)
Sounds pretty good, eh? And guys: don't you think it's be cool to get a letter stating all the reasons why your girlfriend like you?
Sure would help you figure out if the girl is really interested in you of just biding her time, waiting for someone better to come along.
I imagine mine would go like this:
Dear Bryan,
From the times we're shared together, I can honestly say you are not only the best boyfriend I have ever had, but that you've also become my best friend.
Truly, there is no man in the world who could take your place in my life. I love you, and always will.
Oh, and by the way, you are incredibly handsome, and I adore that quirky smile you have in your Ka Leo photograph.
With love,
Girl of Bryan's Dreams
Given this, can there be any reason why Letter of Intent Day should not be a national holiday?
So write your congressman -- marking Letter of Intent Day a national holiday must take priority over all other issues right now. Who know? it might even keep a few college students from getting their hears ripped out and trampled on at some later date.
And besides, it'd make a damn fine day to play some hoops.
