Soccer thrills world as U.S. is again winless

Soccer, the world's most international sport, has everyone captivated again. Everyone, that is, except the United States.

Why is it, American soccer fans are asking, could we not beat either Yugoslavia or Iran?

The loss to Germany was understandable. Their methodical playing style simply wore the U.S. team down.

But Yugoslavia? It is nothing less than an embarrassment that the United States, a country with a quarter of a billion people, cannot assemble a team that can beat a country of less than 10 million.

Not only that, we lost to the Iranians, too. Of the thirty two teams in eight divisions, we finished dead last, with only Japan posting an equally horrible record. And that is little consolation.

We need to get our act together if we're going to compete with the rest of the world. If Jamaica can win a game, we should, too.

If it takes recruiting one of Europe's premier coaches, like we did with Olympic gymnastics, then so be it. This face has gone on long enough.
