September 18 is the Mid-Autumn Festival in China (called "Chuseok" 秋夕 in Korea), and in honor of the holiday we had to give speeches in Chinese. Woohoo.
My speech was about the traditional Chinese snack of the holiday, the moon cake (月饼, "yuèbĭng"). Though the fillings are made of different things, every moon cake has two things in common: 1.) They're made from lots of sugar and lard, and 2.) They have cooked one or two egg yolks inside that -- when the moon cake is sliced into -- kind of look like moons.
In a sense, moon cakes are a bit like fruitcakes. They're frequently given away during this holiday, but not eaten so much anymore.
For the actual holiday on Sunday, we Chinese students will be going to the Chinese Cultural Center for a banquet. I'll post more about that later.
