Yesterday I played a real game of golf for the first time. The ICMP students, along with a number of the J/CHEMBAs, got together at the Hawaii Prince Kuhio course in Ewa for an 18 hole round of four-person team "best ball." I was teamed with two other extreme novices and the Japanese vice president of JAIMS responsible for giving me the scholarship that is allowing me to get my master's degree.
I think the tone for the day was set by my opening tee-off.
Between the balls lost to water hazards, running to get the balls that went wide right into other fairways, and the stress of trying not to embarrass myself, by the end I was frustrated, tired, and upset.
While a certain part of me would like to improve to be a decent player the next time around, I realize that this would take amounts of time, money, and energy that I just simply don't care to invest. Although I kept thinking "golf is an evil sport, plain and simple" yesterday, I've calmed down a bit since then.
I have nothing against it, but golf just isn't for me.
