Today we had Chinese class for the first time in about a month. The book we decided to use, coincidentally, is the same one the intermediate class used at the beginning of the program. We’ll go through several of the chapters that look most interesting in the two weeks we’re here. After lunch, we got together with about a dozen Chinese students from nearby Beijing University and chatted about various subjects in groups of four. One of them asked me what my impression of China was. I gave him this answer:
Yesterday morning I woke up and it was raining really hard. I thought, Beijing rains a lot. It’s a lot like Korea. But then in the afternoon it cleared up, and I thought, oh, I was wrong, it’s just cloudy. This morning, I got up and the sun was shining. So I thought, oh, I was wrong, it’s actually a sunny place. But now, as I look out the window and see more clouds coming in, I realize that I’m wrong again. So I don’t have an impression of China yet, except that I’m always wrong about whatever I think.
