Jessica Lynch became a hero to a lot of people in March 2003, when the military reported the heroic struggle of her supply convoy against capture by Iraqi forces. A week later, a filmed rescue operation freed her from an Iraqi hospital.
She recently spoke at a hearing of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, and explained why she was not a hero[ine] at all. She was unconscious when captured.
However, Lynch is not a hero for me because of her experience. I like her faith in the American people, and respect for accuracy over acclaim: "The bottom line is, the American people are capable of determining their own ideals for heroes, and they don't need to be told elaborate lies."
