Day 49 - Best ride of my life

Woke up at 0430. 1st & 2nd squads of the First and Second platoons to the field for the convoy live fire exercise. I volunteered as one of eight guys to be on duty detail, which turned out to be one of the best ideas in the universe. We served food, then ate; we had Mini wheats, real bacon, eggs, an apple, bread w/PB&J, and tater tots.

I found out there was a mistake – apparently they brought out food enough for the entire company, so the eight of us got to ride the deuce and a half back to the CTA to give food to the other half at 9:30. One of the drill sergeants asked us if we’d eaten. We said, “Yes, drill sergeant.” He asked us if we’d like to eat again, and we said, “YES, drill sergeant!” So we got second breakfast: bread, OJ, Apple Jacks, milk, and eggs.

Then we waited around for a while until it was time to drive out with lunch – lima beans, beef and noodles, salad with French dressing, half an orange, green powerade, milk, rice and gravy, and banana cake. We served, then ate.

At the end of the day, when we picked up, we were smart: knowing that we’d ride in the back with the food, we set things up so that the cookies were accessible. I myself managed to eat through an apple, two milks, some bread, and some of the cookies along the way. What a great time – leaning back, eating shortbread cookies at high speed in the back of a 2 ½ ton truck
with helmet and sweaty uniform.

We ate dinner as soon as it was unloaded – fish, rice, salad with Italian dressing, and lima beans. I didn’t finish the rice, but I suppose that was all right. I wasn’t as hungry as I normally am. ;-)

After chow, there was a fire alarm until 1915; then I went to Bible study. A lot of guys have questions about the Bible. I was surprised….

No letters, but that’s OK. I’ve got to send one out to SY tomorrow anyway. Today was a busy day.
