Maersk Alabama lifeboat

I saw on the news today that the captain of the Maersk Alabama had been rescued. He'd been afloat for several days in a lifeboat as a hostage of several Somalian pirates. [Story]

I was able to take some pictures of that style lifeboat when my TBOLC class visited the LMSRs docked in Norfolk in March, so I thought I'd share them.

In case you didn't see them on TV, this is what they look like. They've got the capacity to hold 50 people, but that's if no one moves, stands up, or fights over elbow room.

See what I mean? Not exactly the cabin of a luxury yacht, despite how it looks from the outside.
