Permissive TDY

Having in-processed and figured out which unit I'm in, I signed out for ten days of "permissive TDY" on Monday the 22nd. So for the past week days I've been setting up house and getting things sorted before my wife and son arrive.

Here's what the house looked like earlier in the week:

It got so bad that at one point, the junk on the countertop itself cried out in a "Face of Mars"-type encounter.

Needless to say, it's been a busy time.

Monday: In the morning I did the unit in-processing paperwork and moved out of the hotel room. At noon I met with the housing representative. The rest of the day was spent unloading the car and buying the basics for the house: garbage cans, a pillow, a microwave, sandwich stuff, and dishes.

Tuesday: I turned in my hotel receipts for Temporary Lodging Expense reimbursement, borrowed some pots and a mat from the Lending Closet, bought a garden hose and sprinkler (the lawn is completely brown), moved over a carload of boxes from U-Haul.

Wednesday: According to SY, the Household Goods Transportation people said the transportation orders were messed up, so I tried to get things sorted out on this end. And since they won't be able to move stuff until after she's already arrived here, I had to get a special power of attorney for my father-in-law to send my boxes. Because I don't yet have internet access, I used the free wireless internet over at the USO building. (That's a cool place -- they even have free snacks.)

Thursday: Got some household stuff from Wal-Mart and fixed up some of the mistakes I make on the power of attorney. Another U-Haul trip and went through old junk. Looked at furniture stores.

Friday: Cable guy came today and hooked up the internet. I checked out the commisary and a furniture outlet in Copperas Cove. Bought a desk and a chair from Wal-Mart (they really are the most reliable source for a lot of stuff in the house).

So now, the day before the family comes in, there are only a few things that we don't have yet -- a mattress, a washing machine, and a table. And those are the things I didn't want to get without the wife's input.

Good to go.
