I don't even know what we really did today, but it was related to the LEX. We showed up at 8:00 and finished at 3:45, but I can't really remember what we did in between.
We did experience one point of frustration when we found out the course of action we agreed on was rendered moot by the exercise's beginning assumptions. We spent quite a bit of time planning things that were ultimately wasted.
As the ammunition officer, my job has got to be the easiest one in the class. First, our particular brigade is only doing "mop up" operations (meaning "low usage"), so that's not hard.
Second, according to our forecasting software, not even an entire week's worth of "heavy contact" would create any serious shortfalls for our armored brigade combat team -- apparently, tank combat is not quite as intense as I had expected. The regular ration of ammunition (called a "basic load") is more than sufficient for our big guns.
Finally, our supported units have access to fully *three* of these basic loads. Our forecasts put the tanks a little low on M240C 7.62mm ammunition, but cross-leveling from the M2 Bradleys would take care of that even without dipping into the second load.
And that's not even addressing the issue of how we're going to move this stuff around.
I have a nagging suspicion that there's something wrong in my estimations, but I'm even more convinced that the entire system is ill-conceived. As our instructor put it, he's flying the plane while they're still building it.
