Renaming the Washington football team
I like Bob Costas. Last December, he used his halftime segment to reflect on the Jovan Belcher homocide-suicide. Last week Sunday, during the Cowboys-Redskins game, he spoke about how the term "Redskins" "is an insult, a slur, no matter now benign the present-day intent." [Source]
Costas added, "'Redskins' can’t possibly honor a heritage, or a noble character trait, nor can it possibly be considered a neutral term."
A grade school friend of mine agreed. "The fact that people are offended is what should actually matter. I’m offended. I’m frustrated by society’s lack of empathy. I’m embarrassed that I have to explain mascots like the Redskins and Chief Wahoo to my children - embarrassed for the people who think they are honoring my ancestors, my family, and me."
However, demanding change is one thing; recommending a solution is another. What should recommend Washington change its name to? Something aggressive ... maybe some alliteration ... with some allusion to our national government and forefathers... Hmmm.
I've got it.
The Washington WASPs.
Anyone want to design the logo? :-)

Actually, all they have to do is change their mascot to a peanut and they can keep their name.
Oh yeah, that's true -- peanuts have red skins. Brilliant....
A more relevant opinion than that of Bob Costas, perhaps:

Exit question: Are "scalpers" selling Redskin tickets even more offensive?
