Holding up progress

I was looking for the phone number of the Camp Humphreys dental clinic today and came across this news article from early November 2012. As the article states, that was the week construction was about to begin on the new 68-bed hospital and 79-chair dental facility.

Fast forward to this past week, when demolition of existing facilities *actually* began, and you can understand my amusement. All the more that my battalion is *still* there, in the midst of the construction work. Everyone else around us (the legal center, the dining facility, and 2nd Infantry Division's deputy commander) has moved into other facilities, but we're still hanging on like hobos to ham sandwiches.

Strangely enough, I happen to be the guy who's charge of coordinating our move to our temporary accommodations, a move that will probably happen early next year.

I believe the original plan was for us to move straight into our permanent facilities, but roadwork isn't yet complete in that area. If we were to occupy, we'd have to park in a dirt lot with a bunch of construcion equipment all around.

Instead, we'll be using the new Education Center as a temporary facility. Currently, it's being used by the on-post high school, but with their new building having been recently approved for use, they'll be moving vacating soon so we can move in.

There are a few wrinkles to this plan -- since it won't be our permanent location, we can't make any significant modifications to the building. We can't store our weapons on site, nor can we install any classified communications lines. And while there's no shortage of square footage, there are far fewer small offices of the type section heads like to have. On the positive side, having to accept the building as-is has made the move-in process decidedly less complicated.

In any case, you can't blame me (or my unit) for holding up progress. I can honestly say we're doing the best we can with the little time, money, and resources we have.
