An uncommon commodity

Madonna has drawn for saying she "thought an awful lot about blowing up the White House." [Source]

I can understand she's not happy with recent political events, but that's not really the direction I would have gone with it. Especially the part about dropping f-bombs while being broadcast on live television. Newt Gingrich said she ought to be arrested, and accused her of being part of an "emerging left-wing fascism," whatever that means. What's next, right wing Communism and lovingful hateness? I suppose anything's possible in America these days.

It's a good thing she's rich and white -- heaven forbid someone from an ethnic minority, with an income closer to the U.S. median, from making a similar comment. Can you imagine what would happen if a Muslim person said the same thing?

It's getting hard to be outside the mainstream these days, even for people who "err" on the side of modesty. You can't cover up on a French beach without someone getting upset. And one Muslim woman -- who served as a surgeon following the 2013 Boston marathon bombing (while 8 months pregnant, no less)-- doesn't feel safe wearing her headscarf in public anymore. It made her a target for xenophobic comments even while walking down the street with her child.

Decency should not be as uncommon a commodity as it is these days.
