Field steak

I ran into an old friend from basic training today: field steak.

Army steak is not what most people consider to be gourmet fare. It's usually cooked well done and seasoned indiscriminately, making it fairly tough and the wrong side of salty.

But for me, field steak is always a welcome dish. I don't spend a lot of time in dining facilities these days, so today's field steak was the first I'd had in a very long time. It took me back to my early days in the Army.

Back in 2008, steak was the pinnacle of Army fare for me -- a special treat for special occasions. I suppose it still is, given that today was our last day in the field for CPX3.

Steak and a shower? That's how you start a good day.
