Make America Great "Again"?

Among the things the political left doesn't like about the Trump administration is his campaign slogan, "Make America Great Again."

What period, the left asks, does this refer to? Was it when women couldn't vote? When segregation and anti-miscegenation laws existed? When homosexuals were seen as being psychologically aberrant?

Western Journal/Conservative Tribune columnist Ben Marquis interpreted this question as "implying that the nation has never truly been 'great' — typical tripe put forward by anti-American leftists." That's a big assumption with some bold language, but hey, it says right at the top: "Conservative Tribune." I wasn't expecting unbiased journalistic integrity. [Source]

Yet the question remains. When was America "great," that we would make it great "again"? Here's one man's thoughtful response to that, courtesy of Breitbart.
He states, "America has been great from the very start because this nation was founded on the principles of freeing us from tyranny." What a great answer. Breitbart agreed, calling it "stunning."

However, it doesn't really match with the campaign slogan's wording. If America has always been great, as the man said, why would you need to make it great *again*? It seems "Keep America Great" would be more in-line with his response.

Which is funny, because that's exactly what Hillary Clinton said in early 2016. As she put it, "Despite what you hear, we don't need to make America great again. America has never stopped being great...."

Mr. Marquis, the conservative opinionist, thinks the man -- the one who echoes Clinton -- "hit the nail on the head with his response."

He's not the only one on the right who agrees with Clinton. President Trump seems to think so, too. As he stated in March of this year, his 2020 campaign slogan will be "Keep America Great!" [Source] Clearly, he thinks things should be just as great as they are now. And given that he'd only been in office for 14 months at the time he said it, any differences in American greatness during his time in office could only be incremental. So here we have Trump coming together with Clinton and conservative media, all agreeing that America is already great, has always been great, and the only thing we need to do is keep it great.

Gosh, it sure is great when we all agree.
