Bigger turn lane couldhelp ease bottleneck

When exiting H-1's westbound lane to turn right in order to turn onto Dole Street, one must first merge with traffic before entering the turn lane.

During events at the Stan Sheriff Center, when the lower campus is inundated with patrons, traffic can very easily back up to the point where cars cannot get onto University Avenue. This needs to change.

Since the only thing standing in the way of a turn lane expansion is a portion of the music building comple's parking lot and a fire hydrant, it should be fairly simple to expand the street's width.

Not only would this smooth out the traffic patterns during games, it would prove beneficial during the weekday morning rush to class.

Also, the risk to pedestrians walking up University Avenue would be decreased, because drivers would not feel the need to speed down the ramps to beat oncoming traffic.

Although the inconvenience of construction would make traffic worse in the short-term, this could be done during either the winter or summer breaks. This is one of the few cases where the benefits clearly outweigh the costs.
