E. Asian languages; more choices needed

When deciding on a minor or certificate program to augment their majors, many students consider an East Asian language good because of our ties to the region's economics and histories.

Unfortunately, since the East Asian Languages and Literatures Department offers nothing but bachelor's degrees in Korean, Chinese, and Japanese, students hoping for degrees with lower commitment levels are simply out of luck.

They must either double major with another discipline, take courses for their intrinsic value, or forego studies beyond the 200 level altogether.

And since double majoring is not permitted between the College of Business Administration and the College of Arts and Sciences, the students who most need strong foreign language skills are not provided incentives high enough to pursue higher language education.

Considering the importance of the job applicant's resume, the university should provide minors, or at least certificates, in these languages.

After all, EALL is the only language department that doesn't.
