Merchants disappoint pageant enthusiasts

Compared to the Narcissus Queen Pageant, the Miss Chinatown Hawai`i Pageant, sponsored by the Chinese Merchants Association, left much to be desired.

First, the masters-of-ceremony, Channel 3's Barbara Ho and Nelson Daranciang, simply could not find anything fully to say. When the swimsuit section began, Ho made a disgusting comment to Daranciang about it being he part he "couldn't wait for."

The fact that there even WAS a swimsuit section is offensive. in spite of the so-called emphasis on "fitness," and the profuse explanations for its return after having been eliminated a year ago, it still came off like a cheesy plot to see young women in skin-tight, revealing apparel.

In the question phase of the contest, graduate student Stephanie Lai Cook Ching spike of education in only the briefest of term, and by stammering displayed her lack of poise and charisma.

After running for 24 years, one would think this year's Miss Chinatown Hawai`i Pageant could have been far better organized than it was.

This editorial cased HUGE problems. I used one of the staff writers as a source for the information, but they had accepted tickets from the event organizers - an ethical lapse.

I then proceeded to trash a participant and insult the hosts.

If one were generous, one could say it was a learning experience for a number of us. A less generous interpretation would be that it was unprofessional and a mistake.

It's been over twenty years, but I still cringe at this.
