French leader shows need for free speech
On October 7th, the European Parliament decided to lift the immunity of France National Front leader Jean-Marie Le Pen, allowing a German court to try him for minimizing the importance of the Holocaust.
Yet considering the obvious significance of the Holocaust and the resurgence of "Neo-Nazis" inside its own borders, Germany shouldn't even waste its time on trying a foreign national.
Le Pen referred to the gas chambers used in the in the genocide of European Jews during World War II as a "detail."
For this, judicial authorities in Munich was to charge him under an article of the German criminal code that makes belittling the Holocaust an offense.
It is true that racism has always been a part of human history. To some extent it always will be.
Still, we must continue to allow the freedom of speech, in spite of the pain the racial hatred has caused. The only was we will truly be able to counter ignorance is to use the truth in plain view.
By hiding matters concerning racism, anti-Semitism and discrimination, we only make it more alluring to the younger generation.
