Faculty and students speak through silence
The candidates for Lt. Governor who discussed their thoughts on tourism, same sex marriage, gambling, and the future of the university, were there.
The reporters, filming the event and scribbling in their notepads, were there. UH students, faculty and staff, however, were not.
With the state's contributions to the university's general fund being cut and tuition on the rise, the forum was an opportune time for members of the UH community to air their concerns. Unfortunately, they didn't.
There's a common belief among politicians that students don't matter. They know that students don't vote, so any time spent coming to UH to talk to students and faculty is a waste. On Wednesday, we proved this.
A crowd of approximately 25 people, comprised mostly of candidate staff members and supporters, listened to Lt. Gov. Mazie Mirono and Libertarian candidate Larry Bartly.
When the next round of budget cuts come to UH, with it be any surprise if no one asks what students think?
