Measures to end pay differences are great
The United States Labor Department has begun to crack down on corporate giants like Texaco and Xerox, forcing them to comply with pay discrimination laws.
The measure is a refreshing step in the right direction.
The measure has received much criticism from employer groups as being a broad sweeping gesture that punishes many different employers for the few who disobey these laws.
However, in a society where women take home an estimated 74 cents for every dollar that men take home, these sort of sweeping maneuvers are a necessity. Pay discrimination is a more prevalent problem than we would like to believe.
If this particular form of discrimination is to be eliminated from America's workplaces, it is important for our government to make a strong commitment to its end.
Sexual discrimination won't disappear without a strong effort, no matter how fervent our attempts to sweep it under the rug of corporate America. These sorts of measure are the key o bringing discriminatory behavior into the open.
