New school idea must include all concerned
Gov. Cayetano's "New Century School" proposal needs to be significantly amended before it is considered by the legislature.
The proposal, as it now stands, reeks of politics. The bill stipulates that the governor be responsible or appointing board members -- a system that lends itself easily to all kinds of corruption and cronyism.
The "New Century School" idea has potential, but it simply must include the idea that everyone who has a stake in the enterprise. Community members, students, administrators, and teachers should all have pivotal roles in the development of this new idea.
The idea of a new kind of school was intended to increase flexibility in the educational system. Who know more about education than the people who experience it firsthand?
Our community deserves a hand in the educational system we pay so much for. While the state government is making legitimate changes in the way we handle education, it should also be reminded that the stakeholders in education deserve to have a hand in these changes.
