Janto's rehabilitation his responsiblity only

Frank Charles Janto, convicted yesterday of murdering a Wahiawa woman last year, said the prison system failed to rehabilitate him after his previous crimes.

Although he has previous convictions for raping a child, assaulting an elderly woman, and stealing a car, he suggested that inmates become violent when prison systems treat them like animals.

Yet placing the blame on the prison system for his failed rehabilitation will not Janto's problems.

His question, "If nobody gets off their butts to give inmates rehabilitation, where are they going to get it?" shows his unwillingness to take responsibility for his own correction.

He sees rehabilitation as a right to which he, as a criminal, is naturally entitled.

Instead, Janto should have realized that his future is his own, and that correction is never guaranteed by any program, seminar or psychological therapy.

A prisoner's only chance for true rehabilitation will be with the realization of, and remorse for, his wrongdoing -- not from an increase in funding.

it's a shame Janto did not realize this earlier.
