SY and I woke up at 6:00 this morning to put the final touches on our apartment, take out the garbage, and eat as much out of the refrigerator as we could before we had to throw everything away. We left a lot of stuff behind for the next tenant – most of our small appliances, most of our dishes, and all of our cutlery. After saying goodbye to our first apartment together, we turned in our keys and our landlords took us to the airport.Though the airport is usually worst place to exchange money, it offered the best rate among the places we looked at 7.11 to the dollar with a $5 fee. (Just the same, the Beijing airport was much better.)
Our JAL flight to Tokyo took eight hours, we had a four hour layover in Narita, and then the flight to Beijing took another four hours, so we were pretty tired when we arrived. While standing in the immigration line, we ran into one of my classmates who’d come in from Seoul only a few minutes later. We planned on sharing a taxi to the school, but we couldn’t fit all our luggage into one car (not because of him, but because of us; in fact, he even helped us out by taking one of my suitcases with him). The trip to the school cost us 110 yuan each, or about $14. After checking in, SY went right up to our room, unpacked a little, and crashed. We had about eight hours to sleep until Chinese class started the next morning.
