The consulate here gets a lot of visitors. As the "New York" of China, it's a principal center of commerce, finance, and politics unlike anywhere else. And for that reason, it seems like anyone coming from Washington to China stops in Shanghai.
On top of that, whenever a state or city wants to send a trade mission, they inevitably come here. It makes for a lot of high-powered traffic.
Recently, we've had the Treasury Secretary, the head of NASA, a Hawaii trade mission, and the Commmerce Department's Under-Secretary for Technology come through (that last one had several of my officemates worked up). Soon there will be a Utah trade mission, the Commerce Secretary, and possibly the mayor of a large city.
It's nice to be in a place that gets such attention. I just wish I had access to those people. Oh well....
