Summer Intensive Month

Students’ summer vacation (방학, 放學) started on July 23, and therefore, so did our “summer school.” All things considered – the weather, the pay, and the fact SuYoung’s also working – I’m pretty happy about about that.

My Tuesday/Thursday class is Grammar. It’s a pretty brain-free class to teach (I remember a lot from grade school) but the book is a little strange. It seems to have been designed for British first graders who are also learning French. The characters are silly (there’s a bird who drink’s “Fizzy Ink” and is afraid of verbs because they EAT things), and the conjugations are overly intricate.

My Saturday class is the opposite. In fact, it’s not so much a “class” as it is a series of workshops. There are no tests, there is no homework – just a lot of talking about movie clips. And I have to try and get a half-dozen shy middle schoolers to open up and talk with each other on days when they’d be *much* happier doing something else.

One week’s finished. Three more weeks left.
