As I was planning my trip to texas, I noticed a strangely named suburb outside Dallas.
So I had to look it up online. Apparently, it's not really any more white than the U.S. as a whole (78% for the city vs. 74% for the country). According to the city's website, at the time of its founding White Settlement -- as a predominantly white settlement -- stood out as a bit unique in the mostly Native American-populated area.
The area's changed over the years, but not its name -- not that it hasn't been tried. In 2005, the city had a vote whether to change the name to "West Settlement," but the motion was rejected by 92% of voters.
I guess that settled it.
