We were supposed to go up to the live fire exercise site in one group, but the mission last night took seven hours to go the 7 miles up to FOB King and back (they got back at 0500). Consequently, we had to rearrange our plans -- can't have sleepy drivers getting in accidents for no reason.
However, the CTs (combat trainers, the permanent party guys who direct the exercises) didn't like that idea, so as we were staging the first group, they "attacked" the base, thereby delaying our departure.
The trip itself was uneventful, but the trek along the dirt road at 15-20 mph was very, very long. If it weren't for that cell phone rule, I could have kept track of the time, but it just seemed to take forever.
We arrived shortly before sunset, and kept busy by walking through battle drills. Once night fell, we arranged our cots in a big circle and slept underneath the stars.
