After we stopped firing, a group of local Afghans came around to pick up the brass that had fallen outside the wire. This kid walking around the concertina wire looking for casings.
He made me think of the Girard Incident of 1957. A U.S. soldier from a town I used to live near -- Ottawa, Illinois -- was tried in a Japanese court for shooting a local woman who likewise was scavenging brass on a range.
I hope that sort of thing never happens here.
