Today's reading has three unique sections: 7:31-37, 8:22-26 and 9:49. The first is the healing of a deaf and mute man, the second is the two-phase healing of a blind man, and the third is the simple but enigmatic verse "Everyone will be salted with fire."
What could that mean, that everyone will be salted with fire?
Prof. Rod Decker offers this explanation, connecting it with Leviticus 2:13's requirement that all grain offerings be salted.
Given that v.48 talks about hell being where "the fire is never quenched," I think v.49 refers to hardship. Everyone in life goes through hardships which refine and "season" our characters. We should share with one another the lessons we've learned, and be willing to learn from others' experiences.
