There is one thing, though, that makes me a little uncomfortable -- when people thank me for my service. I definitely appreciate it, but I'm still looking for the right response.
As veteran Mike Starich explains,
“My experience in the Marine Corps and Marine Aviation, the highs and lows, the dangers and the boredom, helped shape who I am today. I view the experience as a gift,” Starich said. “In fact, after thinking this through a bit, I believe that it is more truthful to say that I owe the U.S. government and the American people the thanks.” [Source]I feel the same way. If anything, I think I owe the bigger debt, since taxpayers were the ones who effectively paid off my student loans. I understood the nature of the job when I signed up, so I have considered my deployment to be merely one aspect of my duty.
Rather than a sacrifiece, my service has been my privelege.
