After PT this morning, I got my smallpox vaccination and anthrax booster. I had hoped to avoid the smallpox shot -- after all, I survived three years in Korea and one in Afghanistan without it -- but it is what it is.
We started at 9:00 with presentations about ammunition -- storage, management, & transportation. This was mostly death by PowerPoint, but there were a few interesting parts. One of which was the 2006 FOB Falcon explosion.
The lesson here was that you need to have proper storage, spacing, and barriers in place around your magazines. In addition, you need to listen to those warrant officers who lay out the problems *before* something bad happens. It wasn't for lack of expertise that this happened -- it was poor prioritization.
I'm sure there were so many other, more important things for the commander to focus on. After all, it's easy to see how someone could simply say, "well, it can't be that bad -- it hasn't blown up yet!" But in this case, a lucky shot from a mortar or rocket triggered a chain of explosions that took out the entire Ammunition Supply Point. It's too bad there wasn't more on this -- it would make an excellent case study.
We finished at 2:45.
