What keeps me up at night
One of the things that worries me about this new job I'm taking -- as strange as this sounds -- is that I'll be in charge of people. As the S-4, I'll supervise two Korean civilians, a KATUSA, and three "green suiters" (soldiers).
This may sound obvious, but supervising people is very different from working *with* people. You wouldn't think it should be such a difficult thing, but I'm the type of person who's happiest when given a problem and stuck alone in a room to solve it. I'm more of an analyst than a people person.
I think part of it is that I'm the only person of my ethnic group in the office, and I have a history of saying stupid things. Maybe not *illegal* stupid things, but the kinds of things that make people wonder if I'd say the same thing had I held the taste of the words in my mouth a moment longer before spitting them out. Real head shaking stuff.
As you can tell from the time stamp, this is quite literally what keeps me up at night.
It's weird. As a younger man, I spent a total of 10 years in Hawaii -- an experience that helped me be more sensitive to others' perspectives. Yet even as a human being, I am still learning how to interact with other human beings.
