Statistical significance & suicide prevention
The Army likes to say that even "One suicide is one too many." I think everyone can agree that's true.
Where the consensus breaks down, though, is on the question, "How much are you willing to spend to ensure a mentally resilient Army?" Does it make sense to pour money into programs that may or may not be effective? And if they are effective, does that mean they're worth it?
So I really enjoyed the Army Times' February 20th article questioning the whether resiliency programs really work. [Source]
It's not enough for a program to justify its results with statistical proof. There's the uncomfortable, ethical dilemma as well -- how much is a life worth?
And is the rest of society willing to pay it?
