French Concession

In the mid-1800s, Western powers won extra-territorial "concessions" in Shanghai. Great Britain and the United States combined theirs into the "international" area, but France maintained theirs apart from the other countries.

The former French Concession still maintains a character apart from the rest of Shanhgai. Tree-lined streets circle quaint neighborhoods, and many foreign consulates are there. (The U.S. consulate is surprisingly close to the Iranian one.)
