The big news of this month is that my wife is pregnant. The baby is due in April. There's no telling if it's a boy or a girl yet, but I've heard that's illegal anyway.
Why? Female abortion. Although the male-female ratio is normally about 105 males for every 100 females births, in 1993 the ratio in Korea was 115.41.
That's a big difference, and can only be due to the combined effects of a declining birth rate and high son preference. Female infanticide isn't the problem that it still is in China, but female abortion is still a significant risk.
So while it doesn't always often stop people from finding out, it's still illegal to tell the gender before birth.
