Today we did a company run in the morning, complete with a little bit of drama. There was some confusion about what the uniform was -- the commander put out one thing; the first sergeant put out another.
When we all showed up in different uniforms, the first sergeant gave his formation a lecture. That would normally be fine, but we're far from your normal company: we're all captain -- the first sergeant is the lowest ranking person there.
So when one of the marine captains took umbrage at the way a lower ranking person was addressing him (as well as the rest of us), things got interesting. It didn't help that the company commander was a bit late, and so was unable to address the situation there and then.
At any rate, it was interesting to see how things work in other unit cultures. Given that the first sergeant was the principal authority in my first unit -- the one I was in for two and a half years -- I have a bit of a skewed view about the kind of respect I owe them....
At 9:00 we started a battle simulation that would take up the rest of the day. That was kind of neat -- like playing those strategy games I liked from the 1990s, but more complex. We as a class competed against the neighboring room.
We did fine, but ended it around 2:00 with the simulation unfinished. Oh well, we acquitted ourselves well, all things considered. Class finished at about that time, but several of us stuck around to finish the papers and presentations that are due next week.
