딱지 - World's Dumbest Game

Afternoon classes at my school work like this: parents pay for 80 minutes of classtime, half of it with a native English speaking teacher and half with a Korean English teacher. A five minute break separates the two.

What do the kids do during the five minutes? They play games, not the least of which is 딱지 (ddakji), the dumbest of them all.

The concept is the same as marbles -- you get to keep what you win -- but the kids use folded squares of paper (or more recently, flat plastic monster shapes) instead. You put a 딱지 on the floor, and you try to flip it over by smacking it with another one. If you can, you win. If you can't, you lose.

That's it.

If it sounds really simplistic, it is. If you think it's the kind of thing that'll die out quickly, well ... I wish it was. Until then, I'm forced to kick kids out of class for playing 딱지 instead of paying attention....
