There are, I believe, three kinds of people who want assault weapons to be available: 1.) Gang members, 2.) Enthusiasts who feel a need to enforce government accountability at a grassroots level, and 3.) Loonies who love to kill stuff good (as opposed to real hunters).
I think we can all agree that gang members shouldn't have them, and as the news story linked above shows, neither should the pseudo-soldier nutsos who just graduated from paintball camp. I certainly wouldn't want to share a forest with those guys.
That leaves the people who believe assault weapons protect their freedoms. While theirs is a decent argument, I still feel the best way to protect our freedoms is to be an active, intellectual participant in government. There are much better ways to prevent infringement on the people's rights than by the threat of force.

Of cuz, the assault weapons or fire arms (whatever anyone wants to call it) are no good.
But I think what is the problem behind is the people! Sometimes, people are just so stupid and thoughtless, I just can’t believe them!
My dad (who lives in Wisconsin's Iowa County) filled me in on an important detail surrounding this case: contrary to the linked news article, no one was using an "assault rifle" in the modern sense -- a fully automatic "point and spray" rifle. The shooter(s) used only semi-automatic ones; they're different in that you have to pull the trigger each time you want to fire.
Although I still feel the same way on the issue, it takes a lot of power out of my anti-assault weapon post. Oh well.
