Protesting

I was walking near Jonggak station (종각역) recently, and lo and behold, there's a protest right in the middle of the street.
800x600

As a foreigner, this can be an unnerving experience, most of all because you don't know what they're protesting unless you stick around for a while. Depending on what it is, that may or may not be such a great idea (they might be protesting you).

This one, however, was a trade union protesting the employment of part-time workers (who don't get benefits like insurance or retirement contributions) on a full-time basis. They work just as hard as the designated "full-timers," but because they're classified as "temporary" they lose out. Thumbs down. I sympathize with them.

Sometimes (actually, it's more like "often") protests can get pretty nasty. Here (2001) and here (2003) and here (2004-02) are pictures of protests from recent years. Here's the CNN story about the one on November 14 (the picture on the left is also from that protest).

They can also be very tragic. Here's the story concerning the farmer who stabbed himself at the WTO protest in Mexico city to show how the "WTO kills farmers."

These men obviously have a passion for the lives they lead and believe it is worth fighting for. Link

You kinda got the ineffectiveness of majority of systems of Korea in this picture. Before the effect of education takes its roll, they enforce it. It’s lame!

I’m glad that you are there now not in the 80s in Korea. It used to be worse than this. =)

When I was young, demos (demonstrations) were so often and so violent. I still vividly remember when I visited a theme park near where a demo broke out (I was in primary school at that time), me and my friends couldn’t open eyes but tearing big time due to all those tear gas in the air (yeah… talking about wrong day and wrong place to held a school picnic day).
