I was typing student evaluation comments in Word today and it squiggly lined a word I was certain existed in English -- comfortability. It's the noun form of comfortable, as in "Her comfortability with public speaking allows her to talk with ease about many subjects."
Turn out, though, that's not a word, right up there with "irregardless" and "ain't." I've been using a non-word!
This strikes me to the core. I've always prided myself on using correct, high-level vocabulary, but I must have gotten so used to using this non-word that its proper noun form, "comfortableness," seems strange to me.
Wow, you learn something new everyday....
