Authentic? OK. True? No....

I was just reading an article about the "Gospel of Judas." In it, the discoverer expresses satisfaction that "even without [the dating], we were able to know that it couldn’t have been a fake."

I'm satisfied with that.

But I do think people should know that being authenticly from that era does not make it "true." As a clergyman he should know that; it's evident from all the pseudepigraphical religious books floating around. It wasn't uncommon for people to write stuff like that for the same reasons people write today -- either for attention or for entertainment.

If nothing else, consider Matthew 27:3-5. If Jesus had asked Judas to betray him, then why did he feel such guilt? Why would he have tried to return the 30 pieces of silver? Why would he have killed himself?
