I've gotten a lot of phone calls from folks asking about the shooting yesterday, so I figured I'd write about my experience.
The short version is that I missed out on everything of any importance. I had a staff duty shift on Wednesday night, so I got out of work at 9am and went home to catch up on sleep. I slept for three hours until 1:00 pm, and then went out with the family to a buffet.
At about 2:00, I started getting phone calls from people. First my commander, then my platoon sergeant, called to ask where I was. Then I got a couple of text messages from a squad leader, which irritated me (I hate getting text messages, let alone two). They said there was a shooting, but I just figured someone had shot out a window in a negligent discharge.
Then my step-father called, and I knew something was up. He wouldn't have just called in the middle of the day unless this shooting was on the Internet. And that's how I learned about the whole thing.
So while the rest of the company was under lock-down, unable to leave until 8:00 that evening, I was at home with my family. When the 5:00 news came on and talked about blood banks needing donations, I decided to head over to the Scott & White hospital out in Temple.
Apparently, a lot of other people had decided on the same thing. By the time I got there, the parking lot was flooded. [Source] From a person on their way out I learned that the blood donation center stopped at 300 pints -- from what I understand -- a considerable number.
So I'll try again a little later to donate; in the meantime I'm just grateful. Yesterday was a good day to have off.

Sorry. Just trying to imagine that the hospital had gotten so many donations, the parking lot was literally flooded--WITH BLOOD!!!
In all seriousness, though, a tragedy. My condolences to those with losses.
(We figured you were OK after you posted about melonic misnomers.)
