Constitutional Republic vs. Democracy

There was a popular line during the election that "we are a constitutional republic, not a democracy." [Link]

As if we've been about promoting the merits of constitutional republicanism around the world for the past 70 years.

Yet Congressman Louis Gohmert (R-TX) seems willing to throw out even the constitutional republic idea in favor of getting a "right" election outcome.

"Gohmert is asking Jeremy Kernodle, a U.S. District judge in Tyler who was appointed by Trump, to allow Pence to choose which electoral votes to count in key states that Trump lost." [Link}

So, 1) sweep aside the 1887 Electoral Count Act now that it's not convenient and 2) have the vice president decide which electoral votes to count and which ones to throw out?

Perhaps Gohmert is comfortable with throwing out the ideals of democracy. He cannot abandon law and order as well.
